National Sunglasses Day is a day to not only celebrate our summer weather and how great we look in shades. It’s a day meant to educate and inform people of how important it is to protect our eyes from UV rays from an early age.
Did you know children are at a greater risk of being exposed to more UV rays than adults simply because their eyes aren’t fully mature yet? As difficult as it may be to keep sunglasses on their faces, it’s crucial to start the habit, make sunglasses available to them whenever they’re outside and model eye protection yourself by wearing sunglasses, even on cloudy days when it’s not as bright.
I’ve been wearing glasses since I was in the third grade although I haven’t always been so diligent about wearing sunglasses. Now that I’m on the computer for most of the day, I can feel how tired and exhausted my eyes have become. It’s more difficult for me to drive at night due to the glare and more important than ever to wear sunglasses outdoors.
Our son is three and a half and although he wears a hat when he’s outside, we recently started making him aware of how important it is to wear sunglasses, too. He looks good in them, too.
Now, if only I could get my older son to wear sunglasses. He’s stubborn like his mom, so it’s a challenge just to get him to wear a hat outside. After learning more about UV damage to the eyes from The Vision Council, I’m definitely going to be more aggressive with him about protecting his eyes from the sun.

The Vision Council provided me with sunglasses and information to help spread the word about National Sunglasses Day and raise awareness for protecting you and your loved ones’ eyes from UV Rays. They also provided the Nicole Miller sunglasses I’m sporting in the above photo, along with an adorable pair of Baby Banz I gave to my niece who just turned one. She loved them and only attempted to take them off once before realizing how bright it was without them.
